Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy
What is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?
Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a specialized branch of physiotherapy designed to address pelvic floor muscle dysfunction.
Having a strong, healthy pelvic floor is essential for our wellbeing and quality of life. To ensure this, we want to be sure our pelvic floor muscles are strong and able to contract when needed. It is also important that the pelvic floor muscles can relax and coordinate well with our movement. If there is weakness, tightness or poor coordination of these muscles, it can lead to dysfunction, including urinary incontinence, bladder urgency, pain, tension, poor core stabilization, and pain in the low back and hips. Taking care of our pelvic floor muscles is essential for living a happy, healthy life.
This branch of physiotherapy also provides prenatal and postpartum care, ensuring an easier delivery and faster recovery.
Do I have to get an internal pelvic exam?
One of the unique aspects of pelvic floor assessment and treatment is the internal exam. This procedure allows the physiotherapist to evaluate the pelvic floor muscles and determine if they are weak or strong, tight or lacking tension, or symmetrical or asymmetrical. It is not a mandatory part of the treatment, but it does provide valuable insight into the overall functioning of the pelvic floor muscles. A detailed explanation of the potential advantages of this exam is always discussed and, ultimately, you will have the final say on what method of treatment you feel most comfortable with.
