Bladder Symptoms
Incontinence
Incontinence is involuntary loss of urine, whether it be a small drop or complete emptying of the bladder. It is a VERY common concern that women are often unaware can and should be addressed.
There are different types of incontinence, the main ones being stress urinary incontinence and urgency urinary incontinence. Stress incontinence occurs with an increased force on the pelvic floor such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, jumping, running, and lifting things. Urge incontinence is experienced as a strong urge to empty your bladder that cannot be controlled and can lead to loss of urine. It is typically triggered by things like hearing the sound of water or returning home after being out for a while. Other bladder concerns that can arise are increased frequency of urination during the day and night and difficulty emptying the bladder.
To address these issues, we have to assess pelvic floor muscle strength and tension, core strength, breathing, and posture. Doing more kegels (contraction of the pelvic floor) is typically not the answer. We have to examine the entire system to get at the root cause.
